I am a small time Zippo collector and after looking at the information on your site I am pissed off to see that some of the Zippo lighters that I have purchased at an Edmonton Alberta Canada retailer are actually rippos. You have opened my eyes to this and I appreciate the information that you have posted. Thank you

Hi, on your BLU page you say "Add the fact that TriStar also make an insert for the slim..."
My Slim has been out of use for some time now as I travel by plane almost every week. I have been looking for a gas insert for the Slim but could only seem to find the ones for the regular size Zippo. Do you know where to find the smaller insert you refer to that fits the Slim? Your help very much appreciated. Thanks. |

Lots of messages since I last looked and some require answers, sorry for not seeing them sooner. So, as quick as possible, Matawan:- thanks for the answer to that one, I dont own one and hadnt seen one in the flesh, so never actually knew, hence the question mark on the info. I will change it next time I do that particular page. Blog Link:- no problem, happy to have it linked to a personal site. Members only area:- Not what you think. The members only area has nothing of interest to Zippo collectors, It is an area used for a different set of interests altogether, so Zippo collectors and enthusiasts arent missing anything there. Railroad Zippos, unfortunately my interest is in older styles, so auction sites are the only real option there.
Finally, Whoever said thank you and complimented on the site, It is appreciated, It took me long enough to get it to this stage, and it is never truly finished. |

The "Windy" lighter made by Matawan is apparently an American lighter, not Japanese. I just picked one up this afternoon, and is labeled Matawan Lighter Company, New York, NY and specifically says "Made in USA" |

sometimes I really wonder why I didnt just say, zippo make lighters, heres some pictures, rather than giving detailed images and long descriptions and date info (as best you can) on the site when I get these questions. I havent seen the lighter so I cant actually 'say' anything. if you compared it to the pictures on the site and read the descriptions, then my images (which are correct) will confirm the model. I havent heard of anybody making rippo versions of table zippos so if it looks like the one you compared it to, and the insert is regular sized, then it is most likely to be genuine, and it will be a model 4 if thats what you decided it was like. why you query the text of the insert is beyond me though. it says ZIPPO MFG CO.BRADFORD PA MADE IN USA and FOR BEST RESULTS USE ZIPPO FLINTS AND FLUID
because that was where they were made? and what they stamped on inserts was what they stamped on the inserts. The number 3 in the lid is mentioned on the page you obviously looked at and the images and text brought you here armed with the knowledge of what it was. see the following text that was cut and pasted from the site to find the number 3 mentioned as being on a 4 lighter. as is the information/text (again from the same page) mentioning the lack of dating codes
..................
'Barcroft' Model 4
The model 4 Barcroft, externally at least, looks exactly the same as the model 3. So much so that many (if not all) of the model 4's are actually stamped up as a model 3. The difference only shows once you flip the lid open. The model 4 has a 'standard' Zippo lighter insert rather than the oversized insert of the model 3. By standard, I mean the same shape as any other regular sized pocket Zippo insert. You could remove the insert from the Zippo you are currently using (though not a slim, obviously) and slip it in a model 4 with no problems whatsoever................
Dating the model 4 Barcrofts can only be realistically done by the insert, but who knows whether the insert is original or not? Even engraved/embellished lighters showing a date can only tell you roughly when they were modified. Though at least they give you a better idea. When it comes down to the wire, the 3 earlier Barcrofts are easily dated to with a few years due to their limited manufacturing periods, Model 4's were made for a much longer period. Their cases (as this is being written in 2006) are at least 27 years old, and that's about as genuine a figure for dating a blank as you can get..................
If the only question was is it original, without seeing it, or holding it, I could never say 100 percent yes, but it sounds original, and the fact that rippo versions have never been seen implies it probably is, let me put it another way, the lighter I am about to light my cigarette with looks like a zippo, it says zippo on the bottom, it has some funny marks next to the word zippo but no actual date like 2007, do YOU think its original? I dont actually know why I am writing this, I should have just skipped it as everything is pretty much covered on the table lighter page

I have a table top lighter. You say it is a 4. It does have a 3 on the lid. But the insert says
ZIPPO MFG CO.BRADFORD PA
MADE IN USA
FOR BEST RESULTS
USE ZIPPO FLINTS AND FLUID
No date or anything like that. Anyone have any idea if this is original? |

Thanks for the feedback regarding the site, For some reason the BLU has been getting a lot of attention recently (thanks for the comment about the update antonio), as to two of the others, putting value on Zippo's is notoriously difficult and depends on where you are going to sell them, for my money, find out the age and model, if it has any historic links or advertising etc, then give as much info and description including condition and sell on ebay. singularly, not as a lot. Finally, Hurricanes, about 10-20 quid a piece at the high end of the price spectrum (even if boxed and mint)if you are lucky, there is not a big following for them, I have a bakelite and a metal version, both bought very cheaply, so dont expect miracles |
